Honorable Mention Apologies, Myths and Prayer Charles Levenstein I. I could not throw irony in the fire without losing my place in the book. I do not aspire to pacific heights, yet would make my mark higher on the door jamb before time spites all efforts to etch a niche, endure. II. God’s annual audit of humankind is scheduled for the fall, angels gather data – similar to the Santa Claus review in winter, but much more serious; not just gifts or coals in your sock, survival is on the block at my age. The rules require human forgiveness, debt reduction, IMF or World Bank review, before Divine mercy is considered, but that requires telling friends and enemies you regret you did them harm : toes smashed, light dimmed, acute senses offended. Of course I have a few regrets, although this year’s toll seems light to me; corrosive guilt that eats my radiator concerns rusty old sins, omission tests failed, no longer remediable, and commissions I remember too fondly. No, most of the blood I draw these days is from road kill. Which Great Spirit shall I thank for raccoons and colleagues squashed during the commute to work or at meetings shortly thereafter? Worse, the howls of those not invited at all. III. August days are filled with light; quiet moments when the din is stilled, time stops, my fears are set aside. I taste eternity like a cat drinking water, only dipping the tip of my tongue, thirst quenched, for now.
